Elementary Latin and Greek: Some Practical Advice

There is no trick to learning Latin and/or Greek. That is, there is no magic strategy that will turn even the most confused and frustrated student into a fluent reader of Cicero or Demosthenes overnight. That said, there are a few tips to keep in mind when beginning to study these languages. First of all, when learning Latin and Greek, you’re not learning living, spoken languages. Why Study Latin?

Are you planning to use the Latin-language ATMs at the Vatican in the near future? Are you interested in chatting with the pope? Are you perhaps hoping to be elected pope? If you answered ‘no’ to these questions you probably don’t have any pressing need to learn Latin. After all, I’ve heard rumors that a software update has removed the Latin option from the ATMs. All kidding aside, no, you don’t “need” Latin. But what can the study of Latin offer you?
